#071: A Worldwide Photo Walk

This past weekend, I joined the “Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photo Walk 2025” in Kuala Lumpur. I’ve never participated in one of these global photo walks before, so I thought I’d give it a try this year. It was hosted by someone I know from my usual photo outings around town, Raja Indra Putra, “Ripi” as he is affectionately known, and no surprise, there was a good number of people who participated, too.
At this particular outing, we walked around the Brickfields area. The Little India of KL, located adjacent to one of the main transport hubs in the city. The route was pre-planned, and we gathered at a designated mamak shop - as we normally do here in Malaysia - before the walk began. A short briefing later, and we were off, en masse, a giant slow-moving group of avid photographers on the hunt for picture-perfect moments.
A few familiar faces were around, and I got to meet some new people, too; all part of this social gathering. But as with large photowalks, it was not always easy to take nice, clean photos of the surroundings, as there were always people from the group around. Random people and shop vendors were equally curious and apprehensive when we approached. So I did my best to hang back and keep a few paces behind the main group. A totally different style of shooting and level of awareness required compared to when I’m out by myself.
The day started overcast and cool, but then the sun came out (it was meant to be overcast throughout the day), and it was blazing hot for the rest of the morning, and unfortunately, I didn’t bring a cap this time. We worked our way through some of the main roads and alleyways of Brickfields. Making our way to the Hindu temples where the annual Deepavali prayers were taking place at this time of year; roads were packed with people and cars. The temples were crowded, full of life, colours, and everyone was in a jovial mood. We then walked down along the river, in direct sunlight, and back into the main streets again. By this time, it was meant to be a break and a rest from the heat at a small food court, but most took the opportunity to depart, the heat getting to us all.
It was a nice photo walk, meeting new people and observing how everyone has their own style and vision when it comes to taking photos on the street. Not sure if I would join another large photowalk like this in the future, the thrill wears off quickly, but at least I gave it a try this time and getting to know fellow photographers is always fun.
Enjoy the photos below, a collection of shots from around the Brickfields area. No specific theme or story to tell, just what I saw during the walk.
Cheers.
